The Mittersill mine

The Mittersill mine, located in Salzburg, Austria, is a key source of tungsten. What started out as an open-pit mine in 1976 has since evolved into a highly advanced underground mine.

The scheelite deposit outside of Mittersill was discovered in 1967, and remains to this day the largest scheelite deposit in Europe. Mining operations began in an open-pit mine in the eastern field in 1976, but operates solely as an underground mine in the western field since 1986.

Over the years, the Mittersill mine has undergone significant modernization and transitioned into a state-of-the-art underground mine. It is one of the most important tungsten mines in the world and is operated in accordance with the highest environmental and safety standards. This is where we extract scheelite ore which, together with globally sourced tungsten concentrates, serves as a primary raw material in the production of our tungsten powders in St. Martin im Sulmtal, Austria.
