Facts about tungsten

Due to its specific properties, tungsten is indispensable for modern high-tech industries. It has the highest melting point of all metals and is therefore ideally suited for high temperature applications in energy and lighting technology, as well as aerospace industry. Having very high density, comparable to that of gold, it is utilised as a gyrating mass, counterweight or vibration damper in aerospace, automotive, sport and telecommunications technology. Tungsten serves as a replacement for ‘in radiation’ protection in medical engineering. In the form of tungsten carbide, it is used in hard metals.

Our locations in Austria

The mine in Mittersill (state of Salzburg) is one of the most important tungsten mines world-wide. In our state-of-the-art underground mine we recover scheelite, which together with tungsten concentrates purchased from all over the world, used as a primary raw material in the metallurgical plant at St. Martin im Sulmtal (state of Styria). The recycling of secondary tungsten raw materials plays an ever increasing role in preserving natural resources and closing the material cycles.
